Residency Program in Neurologic Physical Therapy Requirements

The residency program in neurologic physical therapy includes the following requirements:

Admission Requirements

  • Licensed to practice physical therapy in the state of Mississippi prior to beginning the program
    • can begin with a temporary license, but must be scheduled to take the NPTE and must pass the exam to continue with the residency program
  • Current CPR certification
  • Compliance with al UMMC employment requirements 

Residency completion requirements

Neurologic physical therapy residencies require the following specific experiences during the program:

  • A minimum of 1,500 hours of clinical practice. Included in the 1,500 hours must be:
    • A minimum of 150 hours of mentored practice
    • A minimum of 300 hours of planned educational experiences (including rounds, independent study, Journal Club, educational sessions with academic faculty, etc.)

The neurologic physical therapy residents is also required to satisfactorily complete the following items during the residency year:

  • Orientation processes/procedures for each clinical site
  • APTA clinical skills performance evaluation tools for physical therapists
  • APTA core values
  • Assessment of abilities and skills throughout the year:
    • Skills assessments for clinical examinations and interventions
  • Education/teaching module for students and/or professional staff (minimum of one module)
  • Patient case reports (minimum of two)
  • Live patient exam (minimum of two)
  • Systematic review of literature on a topic of interest or development and implementation of a research study
  • Presentation to local, regional or national professional organization
  • A written final examination

Application

Applications for the residency are accepted from early November through early February prior to the beginning of the residency in August. Experienced physical therapists and new graduates are encouraged to apply. The residency accepts applications through the Residency and Fellowship Physical Therapy Centralized Application Service (RF-PTCAS). Visit the RF-PTCAS site for specifics on required application materials and to begin the application process.
